According to the World Bank, the last decade was golden for Cambodian agriculture which grew at an average of 5.3% between 2004 and 2012 - one of the highest in the world. Yields increased for all crops by 4% during 2004-2012. Farm production expanded at a competitive price level allowing Cambodia to increase its agricultural exports and successfully compete with producers in Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar.
The agriculture sector contribute to over 30% of the Kingdom’s GDP and provide the bulk of employment for its people. During this period, farm wages have doubled over the last decade, and are now better aligned with salaries in other sectors. The success of Cambodian agriculture helped four million people out of poverty. The poverty headcount dropped from 50% in 2007 to 18% in 2012.
Although the focus of Cambodian agricultural production is still on rice, the last decade showed positive trends of altering production towards more profitable crops like vegetables, cassava and maize, and starting agricultural side-businesses to secure farm livelihoods and generate incomes. However, since 2015, prices of agriculture commodities have dropped and the sector needs a new pathway to sustained growth. The focus is towards improving productivity to remain competitiveness. The is a need to shift from traditional to modern technologies with increased use of quality seeds and fertilizers together with improved irrigation, harvesting, processing/milling, packing and storage.
As such, AGRIFOOD CAMBODIA ’17 – Cambodia’s Biggest International Agriculture and Food Production Technology Exhibition will be held from 10 - 12 November 2017 at the Diamond Island Exhibition Centre, Koh Pich, Phnom Penh to provide a platform to showcase the latest supplies and equipment to improve the productivity of the agriculture industry.
